The medieval markets

The medieval markets of the Costa Brava take visitors back to the Middle Ages: crafts, local gastronomy and street entertainment in unique historical settings.

Medieval market of Castelló d’Empúries – Terra de Trobadors

Historic centre of Castelló d’Empúries
12, 13, 14 September 2025

blog mercado medieval

Every year, Castelló d’Empúries hosts one of the most renowned medieval markets on the Costa Brava, called Terra de Trobadors. In the streets of the town, dozens of stalls with handicrafts, gastronomy and local products recreate the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. Street shows, costumed artisans, workshops for children and demonstrations of ancient know-how punctuate these festive days.

Medieval market of Calonge (Semana Santa)

Old town of Calonge
Easter weekend (Semana Santa)

In spring, the historic centre of Calonge hosts its annual medieval market. Smaller and more family-friendly than that of Castelló d’Empúries, it focuses on local crafts and traditional products. Between the ramparts and cobbled streets, you can wander among the stalls of artisanal objects, musicians and small street shows that enliven the day.

Taste Catalonia: from producers to holiday recipes

Catalan markets are an ideal gateway to discovering the know-how of the local producers: seasonal fruit and vegetables, aged cheeses, artisanal charcuterie, olive oil or freshly caught fish. Each stall showcases a local speciality and allows you to bring typical products to cook on site.

This direct link with the producers is part of the values of the slow food movement: taking the time to choose, respecting seasonality, favouring quality over speed. It is a simple way to give meaning to your shopping and to enjoy your holiday differently.

Thanks to the equipped kitchens in the mobile homes, bungalows or glamping tents at Sènia campsites, it’s easy to prepare a meal with these fresh products. A typical idea to try: pa amb tomàquet (pan con tomate) & embotits. Take rustic bread, rub it with a ripe tomato, add a drizzle of olive oil, a little salt and a few slices of Catalan sausage or ham. In just a few minutes, you get a local recipe, perfect for a terrace lunch or a picnic during your holidays. (bonus: rub garlic on the bread for even more flavour). A no-cook recipe, perfect for a terrace lunch or a picnic in nature.
